Bio
Sometimes described as “the soundtrack of Commercial Drive,” Curbside Collective blends the sensual rhythms of bossa nova, the cool sophistication of hard-bop, and the infectious grooves of funk into fresh interpretations of classic jazz standards and original compositions. Their sound is vibrant and dynamic—where smoky jazz meets soulful grooves.
Driven by a spirit of exploration, the quintet continually pushes beyond traditional jazz boundaries, seeking collaborations that add new dimensions to their roots. A recent project with Aram Bajakian at Vancouver’s beloved Tyrant Studios saw the group blending jazz improvisation with the rhythms and melodies of Armenian folk music, expanding their sonic palette in bold and unexpected ways.
Curbside Collective features Laurence Santos (tenor/soprano sax), Norm Quinn (trumpet/flugelhorn), Dave Shakur (bass), and JP Larpin (drums). Guitarist Haig Armen serves as a key creative voice, bringing many original compositions to life. Their live performances are fueled by lively improvisation and rich musical dialogue, with each player contributing a distinct voice to the conversation.
With contemporary influences woven throughout, Curbside Collective delivers a modern twist on timeless jazz traditions—crafting a sound that is authentic, adventurous, and unmistakably their own.
